Loans By Kathy: Hooked on Ancestry.com

Hooked on Ancestry.com

ancestry.com

Yes, I am hooked on Ancestry.com.  I have been enjoying the series on NBC, "Who Do You Think You Are?"  As I have watched the program I began thinking about my own family history and really how little I know.   So last night, I took the leap and signed up.

After almost 6 hours (hence the new addiction), I have 86 members in my family tree.  I started with the members I knew and then have started moving backward to fill in the missing family members.

So, here is what I have found so far on my Mom's side of the family:

  • Her parent's birth, census and death records
  • Her grandparent's, birth, census and death records
  • Her grandparent's immigration papers
On my Dad's side of the famly:
  • His parent's birth, census and death records
  • His grandparent's census records
  • His grandparent's parents
It wasn't a surprise than my family roots on my Dad's side would lead back to Ireland.  I have learned that my Great Great Grandparents were born in Ireland.  As of yet, I haven't found enough information to find the right location.  I am sure, there are many Sheehan's in Ireland, now I wonder if I am related to any.

Stay tuned for more on my adventure!

I tried ancestory.com and could not find anything about my family.  Do you have any tips for a guy, who knows nothing of his heritage and has no one to ask?

What a timely post, Kathy.  I have been thinking and thinking of doing this, and my 91 year old mother has a sharp memory for some of these details.  I'll sign up.

Lester, I would call their 800 number.  They were very helpful!

Mimi, by all means do it!  I wish I had someone to confirm some of the details, or offer explanations.  For example, my Great Grandparents were born in Hungary (Mom's side), yet the census record shows their country of birth as Czechoslovakia.  That is a mystery to me, I would love to know why!

My Brother has been using this site for a while and has come up with some great information about our past.

Today, I learned that my Great Grandparents ran a boarding house in Alliance, Ohio.  I never knew that!

Hi Kathy///

I need to get back on my search ... I started my family tree on Ancestry/com about six months ago but then I took a break. You learn so many interesting things by looking at those old records.
